ABOUT THE PARISH COUNCIL

Why not send your pictures to the Clerk to get them shown here!

Sompting Parish Council is one of two civil parish councils in Adur District created in 1894. It stretches from just below the main railway line to the south to Horsham district to the north. To its east is Lancing Parish Council and to the west – Worthing Borough. The A27 cuts the parish in half. It has twelve councillors who represent the four wards. The Councillors do not accept any payment for their time.

The Parish Council has taken the lease for the old community centre, now named Harriet Johnson Centre, in Loose Lane and for the public toilet block on the Sompting recreation ground. The Parish now has a Parish Council Office which is situated within the Harriet Johnson Centre. Contact the Clerk on 07813484857 or  mailto:clerk@sompting.org.uk

The Parish Council has four  main committees – Finance and General Purposes, Amenities and Environment, Planning and Centre committee. Each month there is a Full Council meeting. Further details of these can be found via meetings page.

The Council has twelve councillors, three in each ward. A pictorial list of the councillors with the contact details here.

Sompting Parish Council is active in improving and maintaining facilities and the general environment for the community of Sompting. It undertakes projects itself or grant funds and supports projects being completed by volunteer groups and / or charities. It also works with existing providers relating on matters such as highways, recreational and leisure facilities, youth facilities and meeting the needs of the elderly. It now has “The general Power of Competence” which widens the activities it can do or support financially. However, it is restricted by legislation in what powers it has to function by and is careful not to take on responsibilities of the District or County Council but it will work in partnership with those authorities and voluntary groups etc. The Council is funded through levying a precept on its residents which is collected by the District Council via the council tax.

Under Adur District Council, the toilets on the Sompting recreation ground have been closed for several years. Your Parish Council refurbished the toilets last year to a high standard but each time the toilets were opened, they were vandalised thus forcing the Parish Council to close them whilst repair work was undertaken.

Sompting Parish Council does not own any land and is not responsible for any public open spaces although it does own some of the bus shelters around the Parish.

The Parish Council employs three staff - the Parish Clerk, Assistant Parish Clerk and the Centre Manager, all working part-time, based at the Harriet Johnson Centre.
